In 2016 Dutch born Marieke Heeremans launched ekonima with an exquisite collection of wooden art prints titled ‘Plant People’.
Beautiful nature-inspired photographs are printed on micro wood veneer, which is sourced from sustainable FSC-controlled wood logs. The veneer, or thinly sliced wood, is 100% biodegradable.
Each ekonima art print can be gifted as art cards or framed and displayed as wall decor. Ideal for incorporating a nature-inspired aesthetic into the modern home. Prints can also be purchased in a rustic frame made from Australian rescued timber.
ekonima seeks to both capture and celebrate Australian flora as experienced in Sydney. And so, the ‘Plant People’ series tells the story of local flora seen as local ‘characters’. Each print is affectionately named after the personality the image evokes such as ‘Natural Beauty’, ‘Little Darling’ and ‘Miss Chatterbox’. As some plants are naturally more chatty than others.
You can find ekonima art prints stocked in boutique florists and exclusive gift shops. For more information, see stockists.
The birth of ekonima
ekonima started as a series of photographs of nature in urban, everyday settings.
On my walk home one day in the beautiful waterside suburb of Potts Point, I noticed a gorgeous climbing vine that covered a good part of a wall. It had the cutest little leaves, and I took a close-up of them. I then started to take photographs of trees, plants and flowers everywhere, focusing on unusual shapes, textures, and colours.
Before too long, I had an entire collection of images that I wanted to share with the world. And so, ekonima was born.
I have always been drawn to the natural beauty of wood. It is an exquisite raw material and provides a unique and eco-friendly canvas, keeping the brand ekonima as close to nature as possible.
Just as each tree is different, the colour and pattern of every wood veneer will vary. This makes each ekonima print truly one-of-a-kind.
I hope that my love for all things green is infectious and that ekonima can remind people that the beauty of nature exists around us, everyday. All we have to do is stop, look, and see.
